# Robinson Crusoe — The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe character guide > Robinson Crusoe in The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Bob, Robin, Poor Robin Crusoe, Robinson, Unknown **First appearance:** 0000-i-start-in-life ## Snapshot A York merchant's son who spurned the law and a safe middle station for the sea, and got shipwrecked for his disobedience. ## Who they are Crusoe narrates his own story as a prodigal: warned by his gout-ridden father that the middle state holds the fewest disasters, he goes to sea anyway and washes up alone on a shore he names the Island of Despair. His defining tension is between restless appetite and the patient labor that survival demands, and between the Providence he keeps invoking and the ledger-book practicality he applies to everything. His early journal — salvaging the wreck, fortifying a rock, killing a she-goat — is the arc's engine: a man rebuilding a whole civilization out of wreckage, one tedious day at a time. ## Relationships ### [Friday](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/friday) _friendship_ Friday is Crusoe's devoted companion and servant, saved from cannibals, forming a deep bond of loyalty and mutual dependence. ### [The Captain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/the_captain) _professional_ Crusoe assists the English captain in retaking his ship from mutineers, establishing a relationship of mutual respect and obligation. ### [The Master](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/the_master) _professional_ The Master is the captain of the ship Crusoe sails on early in his voyages, representing a formal employer-crew relationship. ### [Xury](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/xury) _friendship_ Xury is a young boy who escapes with Crusoe from captivity, serving as a loyal companion until Crusoe sells him to a Portuguese captain. ### [Mutineers](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/mutineers) _rivalry_ The mutineers are antagonists who rebel against the captain, and Crusoe helps subdue them to regain control of the ship. ### [The Spaniards](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/the_spaniards) _friendship_ Crusoe rescues and allies with Spanish sailors stranded on the island, forming a cooperative survival group. ### [Poll](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/poll) _friendship_ Poll is a parrot Crusoe teaches to speak, serving as a long-term companion and source of comfort during his isolation. ### [Tom Smith](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/tom_smith) _professional_ Tom Smith is a crew member Crusoe interacts with during the mutiny events, likely as a subordinate ally. ### [Benamuckee](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/benamuckee) _psychological_ Benamuckee represents Friday's pagan beliefs that Crusoe seeks to replace with Christianity, creating a subtle ideological conflict. ### [Friday](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/friday) _friendship_ Friday is Crusoe's devoted companion and servant, saved from cannibals, forming a deep bond of loyalty and mutual dependence. ### [Friday](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/friday) _friendship_ Friday is Crusoe's devoted companion and servant, saved from cannibals, forming a deep bond of loyalty and mutual dependence. ### [Xury](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/robinson_crusoe_se/characters/xury) _friendship_ Xury is a young boy who escapes with Crusoe from captivity, serving as a loyal companion until Crusoe sells him to a Portuguese captain. ##
