Concepts
Ideas that structure Robbery Under Arms by Rolf Boldrewood — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Crime and Punishment
The novel explores the consequences of a life of crime through the Marston family's descent into bushranging, cattle duffing, and robbery, culminating in imprisonment, death, and the inescapable weight of guilt and retribution.
Family and Loyalty
The Marston family is bound by deep loyalty, yet torn apart by the father's criminal influence; the narrative shows how family ties both sustain and doom the characters, as seen in Dick's love for his mother and sister Aileen.
The Bush and Outlaw Life
The Australian bush is portrayed as both a refuge and a prison, with the 'Hollow' serving as a secret hideout that enables the gang's exploits while also isolating them from society and honest living.
Honor and Morality
Characters grapple with a code of honor among thieves, contrasting with societal morality; Starlight's gentlemanly conduct and the gang's refusal to kill in cold blood are set against Moran's brutality, highlighting moral ambiguity.
Class and Social Mobility
The book examines class distinctions in colonial Australia, with characters like Starlight (a fallen gentleman) and the Marstons (bush natives) navigating a society where wealth and status can be gained or lost through crime or luck.
Love and Sacrifice
Romantic love is a source of hope and pain, as seen in Jim's devotion to Jeanie, Dick's relationship with Gracey, and Aileen's love for Starlight; these relationships drive characters toward redemption or deeper tragedy.
Fate and Free Will
Dick Marston reflects on his choices and the inevitability of his downfall, suggesting a tension between personal responsibility and the deterministic pull of family legacy and circumstance.
Colonial Australia and the Gold Rush
The setting of the gold rush and expanding frontier shapes the narrative, providing opportunities for crime (e.g., gold robbery) and escape, while also symbolizing the lawlessness and rapid change of colonial society.
