> Venters in Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Bern, Venter, Elizabeth Venters, Mebbe Venters, Suddenly Venters

**First appearance:** 0001-ii-cottonwoods

## Snapshot

A young rider cast out of Jane Withersteen's employ who stumbles into a hidden valley and a wounded woman he cannot bring himself to abandon.

## Who they are

Bern Venters loses his place and his herd when the Mormon elders move against Jane, and he rides the sage as an outcast with rustlers and riders on his trail. When he finds the Masked Rider bleeding and begging not to be taken back to Oldring, his quick judgment of her as more unfortunate than bad reshapes his life. His decision to hide Bess in a secret valley, and the tenderness that grows there, drives the middle of the novel and collides with Jane's fury when they meet again.
