# Jerry Card — Riders of the Purple Sage character guide

> Jerry Card in Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Jerry, Card

**First appearance:** 0001-ii-cottonwoods

## Snapshot

Tull's wiry right-hand rider, frog-shaped in the saddle but graceful as any horseman, quick to steal Jane's beloved Arabians for the Mormon riders.

## Who they are

Jerry Card is the kind of rider other men recognize by the way he sits a horse — small, easy, and utterly at home in the saddle, which makes his thievery of Black Star and Night all the more galling. As Tull's lieutenant he carries out the dirty work of the Mormon riders, and his theft of Jane's racers turns a political feud into a personal race across the sage. Venters's pursuit of Card becomes one of the novel's sharpest tests of nerve, speed, and the will to kill.
