# Bishop Dyer — Riders of the Purple Sage character guide

> Bishop Dyer in Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Dyer, Judge Dyer, The Bishop, the Bishop

**First appearance:** 0006-vii-the-daughter-of-withersteen

## Snapshot

The Mormon bishop who rules Cottonwoods from the pulpit and the magistrate's bench, pressing Jane Withersteen to marry and bend to the church's will.

## Who they are

Bishop Dyer wields both spiritual and civil authority in the village, blessing children with his great hands and sentencing riders with the same calm. He is the quiet engine behind Jane's persecution — her herds scattered, her riders jailed, her independence slowly strangled — and he does it all in the language of duty and faith. His power makes him the story's most dangerous figure precisely because he never draws a gun; he simply waits for the community to do his work.
