> Pope Leo XIII in Recollections of Full Years by Helen Herron Taft.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Pope Leo, Pope Leo XIII, Leo XIII, Leo

**First appearance:** 0013-xi-a-trip-to-rome

## Snapshot

The aged pontiff with whom Taft negotiated the thorny question of Philippine church lands, a diplomatic counterpart whose Vatican etiquette tested American ingenuity.

## Who they are

Pope Leo XIII sits at the center of one of Taft's most delicate missions: an American official, barred by his own constitution from formal diplomatic ties to the Vatican, nonetheless needing to bargain over friars' lands in the Philippines. Helen watches her husband navigate protocol, cardinals, and the impossibility of also meeting the King of Italy. The Roman episode shows the Tafts' world as one of improvised statecraft, where religion, empire, and etiquette collide.
