# Datto Piang — Recollections of Full Years character guide

> Datto Piang in Recollections of Full Years by Helen Herron Taft.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Piang, Datto Piang

**First appearance:** 0011-ix-the-wild-men-s-country

## Snapshot

A Moro datto of Mindanao whose alliance with the American Commission made him a pivotal, uneasy partner in the project of pacifying the southern islands.

## Who they are

Piang belongs to the delicate machinery by which the Commission hoped to govern Moro country through its own chiefs rather than by conquest, making his loyalty both an asset and a gamble. His authority rests on local prestige the Americans can neither create nor fully control, so every concession to him is also a concession to forces outside Manila's reach. For the early arc of the recollections, he embodies the central question of whether partnership or force will hold the new possessions together.
