# Maria Herron — Recollections of Full Years character guide

> Maria Herron in Recollections of Full Years by Helen Herron Taft.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Maria, Miss Herron, Miss Maria Herron

**First appearance:** 0004-ii-cincinnati-and-washington

## Snapshot

Helen Taft's unmarried sister, who stepped in as White House hostess during the First Lady's long convalescence and helped stage the administration's celebrated garden parties.

## Who they are

When illness kept Helen Taft from presiding over her own social season, her sisters—including Miss Maria Herron—traveled to Washington to represent her as hostess whenever duty required. Maria thus belongs to the quiet machinery of the Taft White House, the family substitute who fills a chair the First Lady cannot occupy. Her presence sharpens the book's running theme of hospitality as performance: even from an upstairs sickroom, Helen directed arrangements while others smiled in her place.
