# Emilio Aguinaldo — Recollections of Full Years character guide

> Emilio Aguinaldo in Recollections of Full Years by Helen Herron Taft.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Aguinaldo, General Aguinaldo

**First appearance:** 0007-v-first-impressions-of-manila

## Snapshot

The Filipino revolutionary leader whose insurgency shadows the Tafts' entire Philippine years, an absent antagonist against whom every ceremony of American rule is measured.

## Who they are

Aguinaldo never appears directly in Helen Taft's recollections, yet his revolt frames the world she describes: the military escorts, the uneasy peace, the inaugural pomp staged over a country still smoldering. The book's Manila chapters read as an American attempt to win loyalty that Aguinaldo's movement claimed by force. His offstage presence gives the Tafts' civil mission its stakes—and its irony.
