## Who they are

René LeFleur keeps his offices in the old slave quarters of Pirate's Haven, greeting the returning Ralestones with outstretched hands and a warmth that Val finds himself trusting almost before their grip ends. His arched eyebrows and italic-spoken enthusiasm make him seem harmlessly droll, yet he withdraws to the window the instant Rupert's yellowed documents are in his hands, and his attention to them is anything but casual. He is the hinge between the family's shabby present and whatever the property still conceals, and his geniality is the first thing the Ralestones must learn to read.
