# How does Ragged Dick develop the theme of Individual Agency and Ambition?

> Ragged Dick by Horatio Alger Jr.

## Answer

Ragged Dick by Horatio Alger Jr. develops Individual Agency and Ambition across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Dick's rise is driven by his own choices—to stop gambling, to study, to save money—rather than by luck alone; the story emphasizes that one's future depends mainly on personal effort and determination.

Despite his poverty, Dick shows resourcefulness and a desire to improve, as seen when he accepts Frank Whitney's offer of new clothes and advice.

Dick's self-reliance and willingness to earn his own money demonstrate his agency and drive to improve his circumstances.

Dick contrasts his own energetic pursuit of work with Johnny's laziness, emphasizing the role of personal effort in escaping poverty.
