Ragged Dick

I: Ragged Dick Is Introduced to the Reader
The reader is introduced to Ragged Dick, a young bootblack living in New York City. He wakes up in a wooden box, begins his day shining shoes, and demonstrates a mix of faults—smoking, gambling, and occasional tricks—alongside admirable traits like honesty, self-reliance, and a refusal to steal. He meets Mr. Greyson, who gives him twenty-five cents for a shine and asks Dick to return the change, testing his integrity.
Chapter 4
II: Johnny Nolan
After finishing his morning work, Dick treats his friend Johnny Nolan to breakfast and contrasts their work ethics. Johnny reveals he ran away from a farm job and fears the man who placed him there. Dick reflects on Johnny's lack of ambition and later accepts a two-dollar bill from a customer, which turns out to be counterfeit.
Chapter 5
Dick Makes a Proposition
Dick confronts a dishonest clerk who tries to keep a counterfeit bill, but with the help of the bill's owner, the clerk is exposed and fired. Later, Dick overhears a visitor, Frank Whitney, wishing for a guide to New York. Dick offers his services, and despite Frank's initial hesitation about Dick's ragged appearance, Mr. Whitney decides to give Dick a chance, leading them to a hotel room.
