> Butler Cornbury in Rachel Ray by Anthony Trollope.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** young Butler Cornbury, Mrs. Butler Cornbury, Cornbury, young Cornbury, Butler

**First appearance:** 0016-xvii-electioneering

## Snapshot

A good-natured young landowner and election candidate who waltzes Rachel through her first party and pulls her into Baslehurst's brighter social orbit.

## Who they are

Walter Cornbury arrives at Mrs. Tappitt's dance as his cousin's pet project, cheerfully claiming Rachel for the first waltz and promising to pull her through. His easy charm and political usefulness make him a bridge between the brewery set and the town's respectable families, and his dancing is openly counted as good as a vote. He matters because his casual kindness gives Rachel a taste of a wider world just as her ties to the Tappitts are fraying.
