Chapter 1
The Ray Family
This chapter introduces the Ray family, consisting of the gentle, timid widow Mrs. Ray and her two daughters: the stern, religiously severe widow Mrs. Prime (Dorothea) and the lively, industrious younger daughter Rachel. The family lives in a small cottage at Bragg's End, near Baslehurst. Tensions arise when Mrs. Prime learns from Miss Pucker that Rachel has been seen walking with a young man from the brewery, causing great alarm in the household. The chapter contrasts the characters of the three women, highlighting Mrs. Prime's harsh piety and love of power, Mrs. Ray's softness and fear of young men, and Rachel's youthful spirit and independence.
Chapter 2
The Young Man from the Brewery
Mrs. Ray, prompted by her eldest daughter Dorothea and Miss Pucker, confronts Rachel about her acquaintance with Luke Rowan, the young man from the brewery. Rachel defends herself, explaining that she only walked with him briefly after a group outing and that he is currently away in Exeter. Despite Rachel's reassurances, Mrs. Ray remains uneasy. The chapter also reveals Rachel's dislike of the Dorcas meetings and Miss Pucker, and her refusal to attend further gatherings.
Chapter 3
III: The Arm in the Clouds
Rachel returns home late to find her mother and sister anxious and suspicious. The chapter provides background on the brewery of Bungall and Tappitt and the Tappitt family. It details how Rachel's acquaintance with Luke Rowan developed, including a walk home from the churchyard where Luke pointed out a striking sunset, calling her by her first name. Mrs. Prime observes them from a distance, and Mrs. Tappitt begins to dislike Rachel.
Chapter 4
IV: What Shall Be Done About It?
The chapter opens with Rachel returning home to find her sister Dorothea (Mrs. Prime) confronting her about being seen alone with Luke Rowan in the churchyard. Mrs. Prime insists that Rachel must be disciplined, and threatens to leave the cottage if her mother does not take action. Rachel defends herself, claiming she did nothing wrong, and asks to speak privately with her mother. The next day, the family attends church in gloomy silence, unable to discuss the matter. Meanwhile, Luke Rowan reflects on the encounter, admiring Rachel's womanly spirit and thinking about his future.
Chapter 5
Mr. Comfort Gives His Advice
Mrs. Ray seeks Mr. Comfort's advice about Rachel attending Mrs. Tappitt's party, revealing the family conflict over Rachel's growing independence and Luke Rowan's interest. Mr. Comfort advises caution but encourages the match, while Mrs. Prime reacts with horror. The Tappitts debate Rachel's invitation, ultimately sending it, and Rachel receives the note, leading to further tension with her mother and sister.
