## Who they are

Domin presides over the factory, dictating orders to Southampton and Hamburg and welcoming Helena Glory with the ease of someone who believes he has no secrets worth keeping. He loves Helena, yet he cannot hear her fear: when she begs him to close the works and flee, he calls the revolts and wars 'passing troubles' bound to precede a new order. His unshakable self-confidence is the play's central irony, and the early scenes plant every reason it will be tested.
