## Who they are

Busman handles the commercial side of R.U.R., the man who turns Robots into invoices, shipping terms, and part payment in coal. He is the play's pragmatist, quick to ask Gall when the experiments began and how many Robots were altered, as if the answer could be filed. His business-as-usual instinct in the early acts sharpens the irony of a company that has sold its own replacement and cannot yet read the silence on the other end of the wire.
