## Who they are

Alquist oversees the factory's construction department, a practical man among visionaries who measure the world in orders and output. In the besieged drawing-room he sits apart, listening to Helena's Rachmaninoff while the others calculate volts and barricades, and his small gratitude for the music marks him as the one who values what cannot be manufactured. His presence in the early–middle arc grounds the play's abstractions in the plain dignity of making things that last.
