Chapter 3
Quicksand
Helga Crane, a mixed-race woman, grapples with her identity and dissatisfaction while teaching at Naxos, a Southern black school. She resigns after feeling suffocated by its oppressive conformity and hypocrisy, then visits her white uncle in Chicago who rejects her. She finds temporary refuge with Mrs. Hayes-Rore, moves to Harlem, and later inherits money from her uncle, which she uses to travel to Denmark. In Copenhagen, she is exoticized by her aunt and uncle and courted by artist Axel Olsen, but she rejects his marriage proposal. Returning to Harlem, she has a brief, intense encounter with Dr. Anderson, then undergoes a religious conversion and marries Reverend Pleasant Green, moving to rural Alabama. Her life deteriorates through repeated childbirths and poverty, leaving her physically and spiritually broken, contemplating escape.
Chapter 4
I
Helga Crane sits alone in her room at Naxos, reflecting on her dissatisfaction with the school, her strained engagement to James Vayle, and her decision to leave. She feels alienated by the rigid social hierarchy and the patronizing attitudes of the faculty, and resolves to end her engagement and return to Chicago.
Chapter 5
II
Helga Crane awakens with a sense of apprehension and reaffirms her decision to leave Naxos, despite the practical difficulties. She reflects on her discontent with the school's oppressive discipline, hypocrisy, and the stifling environment. After a conversation with Margaret Creighton, who urges her to reconsider, Helga remains resolute, feeling a deep internal conflict about what she truly wants in life.
