Psmith, Journalist
Psmith and Billy Windsor take over the editorship of Cosy Moments and begin a crusade against the slum tenements owned by Stewart Waring, facing threats and violence from the gang led by Francis Parker.
Chapter 2
Cosy Moments
Mr. J. Fillken Wilberfloss, editor-in-chief of the domestic paper Cosy Moments, is forced by his doctor to take a ten-week holiday in the mountains, completely cut off from the paper. He leaves final instructions with his subeditor Billy Windsor, who is weary of the editor's repetitive advice. Wilberfloss warns about Mrs. Parslow's lateness and asks Windsor to correct B. Henderson Asher's humor, then departs, leaving Windsor to manage the paper.
Chapter 3
Billy Windsor
Billy Windsor, a tough and experienced journalist from the plains, works as the subeditor of Cosy Moments while dreaming of a post on a major New York daily. The office boy, Pugsy Maloney, rescues a cat from tormentors and brings it to the office. Billy notices the cat's leather collar, and Pugsy identifies it as belonging to his cousin, the gang leader Bat Jarvis. Billy decides to keep the cat and have Pugsy inform Bat Jarvis.
Chapter 4
At “The Gardenia”
Psmith, Mike, and Billy Windsor meet at a restaurant where Billy's cat causes a commotion. Psmith smooths things over with the headwaiter by pretending Billy is a duke, and they bond over their shared boredom with New York's decorum.
Chapter 5
Bat Jarvis
Billy Windsor brings Psmith and Mike to his modest apartment on East Fourteenth Street. While discussing the possibility of moving to cheaper lodgings, they are visited by Bat Jarvis, the leader of the Groome Street Gang, who has come to reclaim his lost cat. The encounter establishes a bond of gratitude between Billy and the formidable gang leader, as Psmith observes with characteristic wit.
