Concepts
Ideas that structure Psmith in the City by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Friendship and Loyalty
The bond between Mike and Psmith is central, with Psmith repeatedly supporting Mike through personal and professional crises, such as offering him a place to live and defending him against Mr. Bickersdyke.
Class and Social Mobility
The book explores tensions between old money, new money, and the working class, as seen in Psmith's aristocratic demeanor clashing with the bank's commercial environment and Mr. Bickersdyke's political ambitions.
Work vs. Idleness
Characters grapple with the demands of banking work versus their desire for leisure, with Psmith treating work as a performance and Mike struggling to adapt to a life of commerce after cricket.
Authority and Rebellion
Psmith and Mike subtly undermine authority figures like Mr. Bickersdyke and Mr. Rossiter through wit, manipulation, and calculated disobedience, challenging the rigid hierarchy of the bank.
Ambition and Career
Characters navigate career paths—Mike's dashed cricket dreams, Psmith's shift to the Bar, and Mr. Bickersdyke's political run—highlighting the tension between personal passion and societal expectations.
Humor and Absurdity
Wodehouse uses Psmith's eccentric dialogue and absurd situations (e.g., the Clapham Common speech, the Turkish bath confrontation) to satirize the pomposity of banking and politics.
Resilience and Adaptation
Mike and Psmith repeatedly face setbacks—financial trouble, job loss, social humiliation—but adapt through resourcefulness, mutual support, and maintaining a philosophical outlook.
Social Performance and Identity
Psmith deliberately crafts his persona through dress, speech, and mannerisms (e.g., monocle, 'Comrade' address), using performance to navigate and manipulate social and professional situations.
