## Who they are

Jove presides over the collection as the ultimate authority to whom wronged poets appeal, the pagan counterpart to the Christian heaven that Bierce treats with equal irony. He is less a player than a standard of judgment—invoked when Muses fly to Apollo with complaints, and when human folly demands a cosmic verdict. His presence gives the satire its scale: mortal critics and politicians squabble below while the old gods watch, indifferent or amused.
