## Who they are

Seneca occupies the uneasy seat of the moralist in an immoral house, tutoring an emperor whose instincts he cannot fully govern. His tension is between the wisdom he professes and the compromises he makes to keep his influence, a hypocrisy he is intelligent enough to see. He matters because he represents the possibility of restraint in a world that keeps proving restraint useless.
