## Who they are

These supernatural sisters sit at the edge of the battlefield, their loom fed by severed heads and blood-soaked threads as they sing the slaughter into being. Their power is terrible and impersonal: they do not hate the men they doom, nor can they be moved by pleas, since the pattern they weave is already the pattern of what must happen. They frame the poem's central question — whether courage means anything when fate has already decided — and give Gray's verse its cold, mythic grandeur.
