Concepts
Ideas that structure Poetry by Sarah Louisa Forten Purvis — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Slavery and Oppression
The book repeatedly depicts the brutal realities of slavery, including physical suffering, family separation, and the denial of freedom, while condemning the hypocrisy of a nation that claims liberty while enslaving millions.
Death as Liberation
Death is portrayed as a merciful release from the torments of slavery, offering the enslaved a final, permanent freedom and rest that life could never provide.
Faith and Prayer
Prayer is presented as a sacred, unassailable refuge for the enslaved, providing spiritual freedom and solace even while bound in physical chains, and affirming divine justice.
Family Separation and Loss
The poems mourn the forced separation of mothers from children, families torn apart by slavery, and the deep, lasting grief of losing loved ones to the slave trade.
Hypocrisy of Freedom
The book critiques the contradiction between America's proclaimed ideals of liberty and the reality of chattel slavery, calling out the nation's moral stain and false patriotism.
Memory and Nostalgia
Memory of lost homes, loved ones, and happier times is a recurring source of both comfort and pain, especially for those forcibly displaced from their native lands.
Sisterhood and Womanhood
The poems appeal to women across racial lines to recognize a shared humanity and Christian duty, urging them to act against slavery and embrace a universal sisterhood.
Injustice and Divine Justice
While earthly justice fails the enslaved, the poems express a steadfast hope that God will ultimately deliver the oppressed and hold oppressors accountable.
