Concepts
Ideas that structure Poetry by Mina Loy — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Identity and Hybridity
The book explores fragmented, hybrid identities through characters like Ova (Anglo-Jewish), Exodus (Hungarian Jew in England), and Esau, examining the clash between racial, cultural, and national inheritances and the struggle for self-definition.
Sexuality and Gender
Sexuality is portrayed as raw, conflicted, and often violent, with themes of virginity, lust, marital power struggles, and the objectification of women, as seen in poems like 'Costa Magic' and the narratives of Gina and Miovanni.
Imperialism and Nationalism
The 'English Rose' symbolizes British imperial ideology, criticized for its repressive purity, class rigidity, and colonial violence, while characters like Exodus and Ova navigate the tensions between Jewish, English, and other national identities.
The Body and Mortality
The body is depicted as vulnerable, decaying, and subject to disease (tuberculosis, phthisis), with poems like 'I' (Small Elena) and 'Costa Magic' focusing on physical suffering, death, and the grotesque materiality of life.
Art and Aesthetics
The book contrasts high modernist aesthetics with the ugliness of everyday life, critiquing the commodification of art and the pretensions of the cultural elite, as seen in the 'Infant Aesthete' and the figure of Esau Penfold.
Alienation and Belonging
Characters experience profound alienation—Exodus as an immigrant, Ova as a neglected child, and the 'human cylinders' in urban dusk—yearning for connection amid the isolating machinery of modern society.
Religion and Mythology
Religious motifs (Jewish, Christian, pagan) are interwoven to critique dogma and explore spiritual longing, with figures like Jesus, Jehovah, and the 'Gentle Jesus' serving as ambiguous symbols of hope and oppression.
Childhood and Innocence
Childhood is portrayed as a site of trauma, neglect, and premature awareness, with Ova's and Esau's experiences highlighting the loss of innocence and the imposition of adult ideologies on the young.
