## Who they are

Moneta keeps the last altar in a ruined house, her face bright-blanched by an immortal sickness that kills not, her eyes visionless of all external things yet beaming like a mild moon. She calls her power a curse, yet offers it to the poet as a wonder, parting her veils so he may see Saturn's sorrow with godlike ken. Her terrible kindness is the hinge of the poem's visionary middle, turning a mortal's curiosity into a burden of memory.
