A hoarse-humming technician who drives sand cars and cracks jokes while his own people call him and his commander butchers for trying to stop a war.

## Who they are

Telt is one of Hys's volunteers, a practical man of equipment and engines who supplies Brion with a corpse and drives him toward the magter tower while defending the only thing that has to be done. He admires Hys — a twisted, self-taught authority on war whom nobody would listen to until it was too late — and carries a raw hurt at being thought insane by the people he is trying to save. His running commentary and sudden silences give Brion a human measure of the Disan side, and his loyalty to a doomed cause makes the countdown feel personal.
