## Who they are

Hys leads the only fighting force left on Dis, a volunteer army of sand-cars and weapons camped in the desert, and he carries the bitterness of a man whose warnings were ignored until the deadline for planetary destruction was nearly up. He is sharp, suspicious, and quick to test strangers, hiding his authority behind a driver's seat until Brion's hunch forces the truth out. His army matters because it is the one armed, organized resistance Brion can turn to before the shooting starts, and Hys's grudging cooperation may be the difference between a last-ditch gamble and annihilation.
