Lea is a scientist pulled into the Nyjord crisis, quick to puncture Brion's grim solemnity with dry wit even as hysteria titters at the edges of her mind. She is brilliant but physically unprepared for the desert — her feet become raw wounds, her scalp bleeds, and she collapses before noon while Brion walks on apparently untouched. Her collapse forces Brion to choose between the mission's pace and the life of the woman he is carrying, and her expertise remains the one asset he cannot afford to lose.

Ihjel was once Anvhar's champion, but the man who forces his way into Brion's hospital room is draped in soft fat, an impossibility on a world of athletes — only his burning eyes still hold the strength that won the games. He recruits Brion for a mission he treats as more important than rank, doctors, or the Twenties themselves, and his urgency is so absolute that Brion's insults slide off him unnoticed. Whatever Ihjel knows, he carries it like a man already spending his last days, and he needs a new Winner because he can no longer be one.

Ulv is a native of Dis who can grasp facts the magter cannot, which makes him both invaluable and suspect among his own people. When the magter raid the Foundation, he goes along carrying explosives because he cannot stop them, and manages to pull only one survivor — Lea — from the wreckage, drugging her and wrapping her in cloth to hide her. His guilty relief and quiet competence give Brion the one ally on Dis who understands both sides of a war he is trying to avert.

Telt is one of Hys's volunteers, a practical man of equipment and engines who supplies Brion with a corpse and drives him toward the magter tower while defending the only thing that has to be done. He admires Hys — a twisted, self-taught authority on war whom nobody would listen to until it was too late — and carries a raw hurt at being thought insane by the people he is trying to save. His running commentary and sudden silences give Brion a human measure of the Disan side, and his loyalty to a doomed cause makes the countdown feel personal.

Faussel is part of the compulsory-volunteer staff Brion inherits, a man who flushes with anger when told that saving a planet matters more than paperwork and who carries the resentment of the whole outer office. Through the letter he delivers — the dead supervisor Mervv's farewell to Ihjel — the reader learns that the staff loathe the Disans and that no one has been able to reach the natives at all. Faussel's sullen presence is the first sign that Brion's real obstacle may be his own people, not the enemy.
