## Who they are

Aboard the Queen, Sinbad is the portly, dignified pest-catcher whose dispatch and neatness have never once been a problem — until Sargol's alien smells intoxicate him and shear away his middle-aged dependability. Now he bolts out the port each dawn and gets hauled back at day's end by whichever juvenile collects the reward, a transaction that satisfies everyone but Sinbad. His nightly recapture becomes a wry running note of how deeply this strange world unsettles even the ship's most settled crew member.
