## Who they are

Mintep rules Vepaja and has never had a son, though a hundred women have tried to bear him one, which makes Duare the sole hope of the dynasty and the reason her seclusion is enforced with the weight of law. He has not yet commissioned the Sofal's raids, leaving Carson and his crew technically outlaws even as they strike at Vepaja's enemies. His authority hangs over every choice Duare makes, and the question of who might father her son — and when — shadows Carson's growing attachment to her.
