## Who they are

Gamfor is the practical intelligence behind the Sofal's crew, the man Carson leans on to identify which Vepajan prisoners genuinely hate the Thorists and which are spies fishing for apostasy with loud talk. He warns Kiron to avoid the too-eager volunteers and to pick the moody, silent men with real grievances — advice that shapes who ends up holding a weapon when the mutiny comes. He also supplies Carson with hard-won knowledge of Amtorian navigation, compasses that point toward the planet's center, and gamma-ray instruments that locate land but can never quite say which land it is.
