Danus is one of the Vepajans whose knowledge of Amtor's geography and peoples feeds Carson's curiosity about the world beyond Vepaja — it is Danus's mention of Noobol that surfaces in Carson's mind as the ship runs off that shadowy shore in a rising gale. He belongs to the small circle of Vepajans whose respect and competence hold the Sofal's mixed crew together, their authority resting on the Thorans' belief in Vepajan superiority. His offhand knowledge matters because it maps the unknown: every place Danus has named is a place the story may yet go.
