Chapter 1
I: Carson Napier
The narrator receives a mysterious letter predicting a ghostly visit, which he dismisses. After a series of events, Carson Napier appears and explains his plan to travel to Mars via rocket, having tested telepathic communication with the narrator. Napier seeks the narrator's help in recording his messages and managing his estate.
Chapter 2
II: Off for Mars
Carson Napier prepares to launch his rocket from Guadalupe Island, bidding farewell to his crew and Jimmy Welsh. After launch, the torpedo is deflected by the Moon's gravity, narrowly missing it but being pulled toward the Sun, leading to a fatal trajectory. Carson reflects on his impending doom and the vastness of space.
Chapter 3
Rushing Toward Venus
Carson Napier, alone in his torpedo, reflects on his psychological state as he hurtles toward Venus. Initially apathetic, he becomes excited as the planet looms closer. He prepares for a crash landing, dons protective gear, and parachutes into Venus's atmosphere. After a long descent through clouds, he lands in a giant tree, discovering evidence of intelligent life—a causeway and cut branches—before hearing terrifying sounds of creatures approaching.
Chapter 4
To the House of the King
Carson Napier awakens in a room on Venus, observing the strange foliage and the scantily clad inhabitants. He is taken to a meal with his captors and their women, noting their customs and attire. Over the next three weeks, he learns the Venusan language from Danus, the chief physician, and studies their culture and history. Danus explains the Amtorian belief that the world is a flat disc floating on a molten sea, surrounded by fire, and Carson attempts to correct this with his knowledge of astronomy, but Danus remains skeptical. The chapter ends with Carson being led to the house of the king.
Chapter 5
The Girl in the Garden
Carson Napier, now aware he is in the kingdom of Vepaja under King Mintep, learns about the social customs of the Amtorians, including their unique relationships and the absence of marriage. He becomes intrigued by a girl he glimpses in a neighboring garden and later sees five men stealthily entering that garden, prompting him to follow them. Meanwhile, Danus explains the history of the Thorist revolution, the reasons for the tree cities, and the medical advancements that prevent aging. Carson, feeling restricted as a guest-prisoner, demands his freedom but is warned that escape is impossible. His desire to see the girl again keeps him from wanting to leave.
