Chapter 1
I: The Pastor's Progress
The chapter introduces Miss Phoebe Tozer, who marries the Reverend Mr. Beecham, a rising Dissenting minister, and details their rise from Salem Chapel in Carlingford to the wealthy Crescent Chapel in London. Chapter 2
The Leading Member
This chapter introduces the Copperhead family, focusing on Mrs. Copperhead, a former governess now married to the wealthy and vulgar Mr. Copperhead, and their son Clarence, a large, mild-mannered Oxford student. Mr. Copperhead dominates the household with his coarse humor and pride in his useless, expensive son, while Mrs. Copperhead and Clarence endure his ridicule. The chapter ends with Clarence expressing discomfort at his father's treatment of his mother.
Chapter 3
Mr. Copperhead's Ball
Mr. Copperhead hosts a grand ball, a novel event for the chapel community, which is indulgent due to his wealth. The minister and his family attend, with Phoebe Beecham insisting on wearing black to stand out. Clarence Copperhead becomes infatuated with her. The ball is attended by Mr. Copperhead's own class, who are envious, and the Dorset family, representing society, along with their humble companion Ursula May.
Chapter 4
IV: A Country Party
Ursula May, a poor clergyman's daughter from Carlingford, is on holiday in London with the Dorset family. At breakfast after Mr. Copperhead's ball, the conversation turns to the remarkable social rise of Mrs. Copperhead, a former governess who married wealth. Sophy Dorset argues that girls should think of good matches as a practical necessity, while Miss Dorset worries about the demoralizing effect of such examples. Ursula, innocent and uncalculating, is confused by their laughter when she asks about young Mr. Copperhead, whom she found kind and agreeable.
Chapter 5
V: Self-Devotion
Phoebe Tozer volunteers to go to Carlingford to care for her ailing grandmother, despite her mother's anxieties about the social gulf between their refined life and the humble shopkeeping world of the Tozers. Mrs. Beecham fears Phoebe will struggle with the vulgarity and low status of her grandparents' circle, but Phoebe, seeing herself as a heroic figure of duty, insists on going. The chapter explores the tension between ambition and family obligation, as Phoebe prepares to sacrifice her own comfort for her mother's sake.
