# Duchess of Omnium — Phineas Redux character guide > Duchess of Omnium in Phineas Redux by Anthony Trollope. **Role:** supporting **Also known as:** Duchess, Lady Glencora, Glencora, Lady Glencora Palliser **First appearance:** 0030-xxxi-the-duke-and-duchess-in-town ## Snapshot Lady Glencora Palliser, the Duke's restless, warm-hearted wife, who arranges other people's lives with more energy than tact. ## Who they are The Duchess of Omnium is clever, indiscreet, and good-natured, a woman whose sharp eye for facts lets her see into hearts even when her own conduct is careless. She adores Madame Max Goesler and manages the old Duke between them, yet she can wound with a casual word, as when she pities Lady Laura more than the woman Phineas actually loves. Her instinct for staging scenes and her genuine affection make her both a benefactor and a hazard to the novel's central romance. ## Relationships ### [Phineas Finn](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/phineas_redux_se/characters/phineas_finn) _friendship_ The Duchess is a warm and influential friend to Phineas, using her social power to support his political ambitions and personal welfare. ### [Madame Max Goesler](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/phineas_redux_se/characters/madame_max_goesler) _friendship_ The Duchess and Madame Max are close friends, with the Duchess often confiding in and supporting Madame Max in social and personal matters. ### [Phineas Finn](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/phineas_redux_se/characters/phineas_finn) _friendship_ The Duchess is a warm and influential friend to Phineas, using her social power to support his political ambitions and personal welfare. ### [Madame Max Goesler](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/phineas_redux_se/characters/madame_max_goesler) _friendship_ The Duchess and Madame Max are close friends, with the Duchess often confiding in and supporting Madame Max in social and personal matters. ## In the story ### [Madame Goesler's Story](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/phineas_redux_se/chapters/xvii-madame-goesler-s-story) Mentioned as Lady Glencora Palliser; she shares in the care of the Duke and is a close friend of Madame Goesler. ### [Madame Goesler Is Sent For](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/phineas_redux_se/chapters/xxiv-madame-goesler-is-sent-for) Meets Madame Goesler at Matching; they kiss affectionately; she explains the Duke's condition. ### [XXV: “I Would Do It Now”](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/phineas_redux_se/chapters/xxv-i-would-do-it-now) Manages the household and the Duke's visitors, firmly refusing Lady Hartletop access.
