# Sir Aglovaile — Phantastes character guide

> Sir Aglovaile in Phantastes by George MacDonald.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Aglovaile

**First appearance:** 0006-iii

## Snapshot

A warrior knight whose brief, doomed love for a ghostly maiden becomes a ballad of how easily things go wrong.

## Who they are

He is a man not given to weeping, yet he weeps in a dream of a dark wood where the maiden of old stands beside him and is lost in mist. Waking on the eve of St. John, he clasps the radiant ghost to his bosom, and she wails, fades, and leaves him holding a corpse. His story, sung by the winged woman, is one of the simplest and saddest in the book, a warning that a sigh too much or a kiss too long can end everything.
