# Why does Wendy leave Neverland?

> Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie

## Answer

Wendy leaves because she remembers parents who grieve and because Peter cannot offer a future — only endless present. When the Lost Boys decide they want a real mother, Wendy chooses the Darling nursery over underground housekeeping. Peter’s forgetfulness shows he will not follow her into adulthood; staying would mean eternal repetition without development.

Her decision is moral as well as emotional: John and Michael belong to London, and Wendy refuses to abandon Mr. and Mrs. Darling’s love permanently. Barrie frames the return as growth, not defeat. Peter sees her choice as betrayal; readers are meant to side with Wendy while still hearing the loss in both directions.
