# How does Perishable Goods develop the theme of Love and Sacrifice?

> Perishable Goods by Dornford Yates

## Answer

Perishable Goods by Dornford Yates develops Love and Sacrifice across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The love between Mansel and Adèle is portrayed as transcendent, but it is also marked by sacrifice—Mansel gives his life, and Adèle must bear the loss. Their relationship is framed as a 'yoke' that both willingly carry.

Mansel's willingness to risk everything to rescue Adèle, despite his unrequited love, highlights the theme of selfless sacrifice.

Mansel's private grief over Adèle's hair demonstrates his deep love and the personal sacrifice he endures in the mission.

Adèle and Mansel's love is a central focus, with both willing to sacrifice for each other. Mansel's decision to stay behind is a direct act of sacrifice.
