## Who they are

Punter drifts through the early chapters as a possible face in a crowd, the kind of passing stranger Mansel insists must be remembered because one of them was certainly a spy. The nickname's dazed quality suggests someone unremarkable and easily overlooked — exactly the sort of person a careful operator would use. He matters less for what he does than for what he represents: the knowledge that the enemy is already in touch, watching the party's every move before the chase has properly begun.
