# Prince Crucho — Penguin Island character guide

> Prince Crucho in Penguin Island by Anatole France.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the later Draconides, Crucho, the Draconides, II Prince Crucho Agaric, Prince Crucho

**First appearance:** 0042-ii-prince-crucho

## Snapshot

The exiled Draconides claimant whose restoration is the secret dream of every disgruntled royalist in Penguinia, and the prize in Father Agaric's conspiratorial game.

## Who they are

Crucho never appears in the flesh, yet his absent name organizes an entire cabal: Prince des Boscénos plots his return less from loyalty than from the hope of recovering his own confiscated fortune, while the monk Agaric recruits the devout to the cause. The tension is that everyone wants Crucho back for different reasons, and none of them can agree on whether to work through elections, bribe ministers, or simply kidnap the President. His shadow gives the early political satire its target: a throne nobody occupies but everyone fights over.
