# Paul Visire — Penguin Island character guide

> Paul Visire in Penguin Island by Anatole France.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Madame Paul Visire, Visire, Paul

**First appearance:** 0065-v-the-visire-cabinet

## Snapshot

The ambitious politician who rises to lead Penguinia's government, a man whose hunger for sovereign pomp outruns any actual capacity to govern.

## Who they are

Visire climbs to the summit of Penguinian politics, where his vanity and taste for royal ceremony make him dangerously sympathetic to the very Draconides he is meant to oppose. He is less a statesman than a mirror: he admires the Royalists' habits, imitates their style, and would happily wear the Dragon's crest himself if the opportunity arose. His rise matters because it shows how the Republic's leaders and its reactionary enemies share the same appetite for power, and how easily a goose can be mistaken for a sovereign.
