## Snapshot

A beautiful, calculating socialite who trades her piety for a freethinker's hand, then quietly arranges the terms of her own marriage.

## Who they are

Madame Cérès moves through the political salons of Penguinia as the elegant wife of Hippolyte Cérès, the rising radical leader whose career she has learned to weigh against her own tastes. When her fiancé refuses a church wedding, she kneels, weeps, and nearly breaks the engagement — then rises, generous and resigned, and goes straight to Father Douillard to negotiate a compromise that costs her nothing and gains her everything. Her cool pragmatism, draped in devotion, makes her the quiet engine of the marriage's political arithmetic.
