Book Summary
David Innes returns to the savage inner world of Pellucidar to reunite with his beloved Dian and rebuild a fractured empire. Facing treacherous tribes, prehistoric beasts, and the manipulative Hooja, he must forge alliances and wield outer-world technology to restore peace and claim his throne.
After a brief return to the outer world, David Innes and Abner Perry journey back to Pellucidar in the Iron Mole, only to find the federation shattered by Hooja the Sly One's lies. Dian has disappeared, and David must cross the Mountains of the Clouds, survive encounters with Mahars and brute-folk, and rescue Dian from a cave-prison. With the help of allies like the gorilla-man Gr-gr-gr and the jalok Raja, David escapes Hooja's forces and reunites with Dian. Abner Perry's newly built navy defeats Hooja's fleet, and David is hailed as emperor. He consolidates his empire by defeating Hooja, restoring Juag's island, and negotiating peace with the Thurian chief Goork. The book ends with David describing the growing civilization of Pellucidar, now united under his rule, as technology and law begin to transform the primitive world.
