Theresa
Emily's sharp-tongued confidante, whose dry asides puncture the pieties of clergymen, ritualists, and self-important authors alike.

First appearance: i
As a supporting figure in Pastors and Masters, Theresa is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Hosts the dinner, engages in candid conversation with Emily about Nicholas, and displays a blunt, self-reliant demeanor.
Theresa is the aunt-like presence in the Herrick circle, listening to Emily's confidences about Nicholas and offering the occasional deflating remark. She sits through readings and farewell sermons with an air of unimpressed clarity, unafraid to tell a self-important man he is self-important. Her dry skepticism gives the reader a foothold of sanity amid the novel's swirl of self-deception.
