## Snapshot

The Iron Duke himself, who inspects the Difference Engine, walks the Great Exhibition with Babbage, and lends his cautious prestige to lost causes.

## Who they are

Wellington enters Babbage's story as an official visitor to the Engine in 1829 and becomes a recurring companion at the 1851 Exhibition, where the great man plays with a child in the crowd. Babbage studies him as a case of unquestioned eminence—how it shapes judgment, how it hesitates before action, as when the Birkenhead disaster waits on cautious despatches. Their encounters let Babbage weigh military glory against his own civilian persistence, and reveal the philosopher's hunger for powerful allies.
