## Who they are

Humboldt stands among the eminent Continental figures Babbage invokes to establish his own standing in European learned society. His presence signals that Babbage's ambitions—the Engine, the system of the universe—are not provincial fancies but contributions to a shared intellectual enterprise. For the reader, he embodies the cosmopolitan web of correspondence and mutual recognition that sustains a philosopher through years of official neglect.
