# Detective Inspector Marriot — Partners in Crime character guide

> Detective Inspector Marriot in Partners in Crime by Agatha Christie.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Marriot, Inspector Marriot, Scotland Yard

**First appearance:** 0002-iii-the-affair-of-the-pink-pearl

## Snapshot

The Scotland Yard man whose name is borrowed by an enemy — a reminder that in this world, even a trusted inspector's identity can be a mask.

## Who they are

Marriot is the Yard contact Tommy and Tuppence believe they are working alongside, and his authority lends the amateur pair a legitimacy they badly need. But his name is precisely the kind of currency a clever adversary can spend: when a foreign agent wants Tommy's confidence, he simply announces himself as Inspector Marriot and is believed. The real inspector's shadow over the early cases keeps the reader asking who, in this book of aliases and agencies, is actually on the side of the law.
