Chapter 1
Dedication
The chapter is a brief dedication to H. B. F. and H. F. M., described as 'Trusty, dusky, vivid, true'.
Chapter 2
A Letter to David Grayson, Esq., of Hempfield, U.S.A.
Christopher Morley writes a letter to David Grayson, acknowledging that the real author of the book is Helen McGill (now Mrs. Roger Mifflin), who told her story with vivacity. Morley notes that Helen's story is unconsciously influenced by Grayson's 'Adventures in Contentment,' and that she and her husband are now traveling on Parnassus, happily selling books.
Chapter 3
Parnassus on Wheels
Helen McGill, a middle-aged woman living on a farm with her brother Andrew, meets Roger Mifflin, a traveling bookseller who arrives with his horse-drawn wagon full of books. Mifflin sells his book wagon to Helen, who decides to leave the farm and embark on her own adventure, buying the traveling bookstore and setting off to see the world.

Helen McGill narrates how her brother Andrew's literary success disrupted their peaceful farm life, leading her to take action.
Chapter 5
II
Helen McGill encounters Roger Mifflin and his traveling book wagon, Parnassus, at her farm. Despite her initial resistance, she is drawn to the van and impulsively agrees to buy it for $400, deciding to embark on her own adventure.
