## Snapshot

A frail, frugal winegrower of ancient name, he marries Dinah to secure an heir and keeps his accounts closer than his wife.

## Who they are

The Baron de la Baudraye is the last of a family that survived exile, revolution, and its own bad blood by hoarding louis and vineyards. Sickly from birth and schooled in monastic economy, he treats marriage as a transaction and his wife's brilliance as an expense he did not authorize. His miserliness and his fragile grip on life make him both obstacle and dark joke in Dinah's story, the provincial husband against whom all her ambitions are measured.
